Reports from northern Nigeria's Sokoto State say gunmen have set fire to a passenger car carrying 42 people.
The passengers were reportedly from Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state to migrate to other parts of Nigeria, due to the intensification of militant activities in their area.
Witnesses said the incident took place around 9am on Monday.
"The truck was traveling from Sabon Birni, less than six kilometers to Gidan Bawa village where the tragedy struck," said rescue workers.
We tried to hear from the state police, but our efforts were unsuccessful, and even when we called the spokesman, his phone was switched off.
We have also called the state security commissioner three times via phone and he has not answered the call.
An eyewitness told Tantabara "When the incident happened in Sabon Birni I was called and informed. Among the passengers was also my mother's brother, his wife and their four children.
"Two of his children were killed. When we arrived at the scene we found people dead, and at least we counted 25 bodies," he said.
He added that there were a small number of them who survived.
"There were 45 people in the car, but seven survived, and they are still in critical condition," said a witness who asked not to be named.
"There is only incomplete parts of the corpse, except that we have joined the legs and arms and buried them together."
He said he was standing at the bus stop when the car took off. "Union members also told us the number of people the car had left," he said.
