Nigeria: South-East Governors on IPOB

Leaders in southeastern Nigeria have condemned the sit-in by the separatist group IPOB for forcing the people of the region on Monday. In a statement, following a meeting of regional leaders comprising of south-eastern governors, traditional rulers and religious leaders in Enugu on Tuesday they also condemned the killings in the region. The leaders took action as an order by the IPOB forced the local community to cripple business activities in the region.  However, the leaders of the South-East did not comment on IPOB President Nnamdi Kanu in a statement issued after the meeting where they reached a consensus and outlined eight steps. Bandits Flee Zamfara Attacks, Dominate Sokoto

Some bandits from Zamfara disclosed that they have fled Zamfara state to set up presence in Bullazu and Gangara villages of Sabon Birni local area of Sokoto state in anticipation of troops from neighbouring Niger Republic, coming to assist their Nigerian counterparts to help curtail the menace ravaging the area. There has been escalation of bandits’ attacks on Sabon Birni, and neighbouring local governments recently, including one on a military base at Burkusuma where at least 15 personnel were killed, and many others injured last weekend. Tantabara News confirmed from sources that the attack was carried out by gunmen from the gangs of notorious bandits’ leader, Turji, with others loyal to Halilu Sububu. The two bandits’ kingpins operate around Zurmi and Shinkafi, two local governments bordering Sabon Birni. Russia's Vladimir Putin To Self-Isolate Due to Covid-19

Russian President Vladimir Putin is going into self-isolation because of coronavirus cases in his inner circle, the Kremlin said Tuesday, adding that he tested negative for COVID-19. The announcement came in the Kremlin’s readout of Putin’s phone call with Tajikistan’s president. Putin has been fully vaccinated with the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V, receiving his second shot in April. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Putin is “absolutely healthy,” but will self-isolate after coming in contact with someone who contracted the virus. He didn’t clarify for how long Putin would remain in self-isolation, but assured that the president will continue working as usual. Asked if Putin tested negative for the virus, Peskov said “definitely, yes.” Peskov didn’t say who among Putin’s contacts were infected, saying only that there were several cases. Abba Kyari To Be Suspended From Nigeria Police Force

Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba has demanded the suspension of Abba Kyari from the police force on charges of accepting bribes from Hushpuppy.  The IGP also set up a four-member committee headed by DIG Joseph Egbunike to investigate allegations against Abba Kyari, deputy commissioner of police and head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).  Usman Alkali recommended the suspension in a letter to the Police Service Commission on Saturday, saying the measure was "one of the disciplinary measures of the police force".  Abba Kyari is accused of accepting bribes from a young Nigerian and American resident Ramon Abbas, better known as Hushpuppy, for arresting and abusing a business associate.  Kyari has denied the allegations.

Germany To Distribute $ 235 Million In Aid To Flood-affected Areas

The German cabinet, Bundestag has approved the distribution of $ 235 million in aid to flood-affected areas, which have killed at least 170 people. Provincial governments will also provide similar funding, and each flood-affected family will receive a cash benefit of more than $ 4,000. There is more money to be spent on rebuilding roads and bridges and this is the worst flood in hundreds years. Hundreds of people are still unaccounted for, although the damage caused by the floods to mobile phone networks is hampering the screening process.

Bandits Shot Down Nigerian Airforce Jet

A Nigerian military plane has crashed in the northwestern state of Zamfara after being opened fire by robbers. The plane was returning after completing a successful operation between the Zamfara and Kaduna states. A statement from the Air Force said on Monday that the pilot, Lt. Abayomi Dairo, had disembarked within an hour.  After surviving the crash, the gunmen opened fire on him, but he managed to avoid them and sought refuge in another village until dawn. "He then used his cell phone to find a way out, where he managed to avoid several militant camps and reached a section of the Nigerian Army, from where he escaped”, the statement said. The statement added that at the time of the news of the crash, Air Chief Marshal Oladayo Amao, ordered that all efforts be made to rescue the pilot.
